Grand re-opening in
The Ship Pommern
On 1st October 2016 the Pommern was closed to visitors and will open again with a new visitor experience in May 2019. The ship is currently moored 500 metres north of the Maritime Museum.
A new quay is being built on the Pommern’s regular mooring spot below the Maritime Museum. There the Pommern will lie afloat surrounded by a large wooden deck, a great spot for events and markets. On board, the main deck and jigger mast are being restored. The entire onaboard experience is being renewed and in May 2019 the refurbished Pommern is reopened, introducing the new visitor experience “Pommern – 100 Days under Sail”.
HISTORY
The Pommern is the only four-masted merchant sailing ship in the world still in its original state. She is a typical cargo carrier, built 1903 in Scotland and bought by the Åland shipowner Gustaf Erikson in 1923. Pommern has carried timber from Scandinavia, saltpetre from Chile and grain from Australia. Her last commercial voyage was done in 1939 and since 1952 Pommern has been a museum ship. Today the ship is owned by the Town of Mariehamn, but is managed by the Åland Maritime Museum Trust.
Pommern - 100 days under sail
The Åland Maritime Museum Trust is making a major investment in a new visitor experience on board the Pommern. The exhibition 'Pommern – 100 days under sail' will make the ship come alive with the crew’s own stories. It will be an exciting experience based on real events, where the visitors get to explore the ship and sense the presence of her elusive crew.
