The Ship Pommern

On 1st October 2016 the Pommern was closed to visitors and will open again with a new visitor experience in May 2019. The ship is currently moored 500 metres north of the Maritime Museum.

VISITS ON THE POMMERN IN 2018

We are in full swing producing the new visitor experience ‘Pommern – 100 days under sail’, which will open in 2019. Accessibility is key concept in the new development; we want all visitors to be able to step on board and have a near history-experience. Simultaneously we are restoring the weather deck of the Pommern, a job that will continue throughout 2018 and stops us being open as normal the coming summer. However, we are keen for our visitors to experience the ship and have therefore decided to offer guided tours between June and August. Pre-booked groups with their own guide are welcome to visit us in May too. Unfortunately, accessibility for guests with limited mobility will be limited and certain areas of the ship might temporarily be restricted due to ongoing restoration work.

All visitors buy their ticket at the Åland Maritime Museum reception. On board the Pommern is no sale of tickets.

May

Pre-booked groups with own guide are welcome to visit the Pommern weekdays 11:00-15:00. The ship is closed weekends and holidays. The group leader or guide must register the group at the Åland Maritime Museum reception, where they will receive their ’boarding card’.

June, July and August

Visitors buy tickets at the Åland Maritime Museum reception. A guide will greet them by the Pommern and take them on a tour of the ship. The tours start at 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00. The ship is closed weekends and holidays. The tours are adjusted to the size and needs of the group and will be conducted in Swedish, Finnish and English. The tour is approx. 45 minutes long.

A new quay is being built on the Pommern’s regular mooring spot below the Maritime Museum. There the Pommern will lie afloat surrounded by a large wooden deck, a great spot for events and markets. On board, the main deck and jigger mast are being restored. The entire onaboard experience is being renewed and in May 2019 the refurbished Pommern is reopened, introducing the new visitor experience “Pommern – 100 Days under Sail”.

HISTORY

The Pommern is the only four-masted merchant sailing ship in the world still in its original state. She is a typical cargo carrier, built 1903 in Scotland and bought by the Åland shipowner Gustaf Erikson in 1923. Pommern has carried timber from Scandinavia, saltpetre from Chile and grain from Australia. Her last commercial voyage was done in 1939 and since 1952 Pommern has been a museum ship. Today the ship is owned by the Town of Mariehamn, but is managed by the Åland Maritime Museum Trust.

Pommern - 100 days under sail

The Åland Maritime Museum Trust is making a major investment in a new visitor experience on board the Pommern. The exhibition 'Pommern – 100 days under sail will' make the ship come alive with the crew’s own stories. It will be an exciting experience based on real events, where the visitors get to explore the ship and sense the presence of her elusive crew.
